Summary of the Article

In the article “Driving a New and Improved Patient Experience with Data and AI”, the author explained in more depth how artificial intelligence, commonly referred to as AI and data, is transforming the patient experience and process that comes with it. This article discusses how patient experience can be significantly improved with AI technology, from registration to the completion of care for patient collections (Riggins, 2024). The survey, recently conducted and reported in the article, shows that 40% of patients can abandon or delay their appointments if they are not informed about the costs in advance. One of the new technologies discussed in the article is artificial intelligence analytics and generative AI. These technologies are applied in patient care and revenue cycle management.

My Intended Area of Practice

My intended area of practice is children and adolescents, as pediatric nursing addresses their physical, psychological, medical, educational, and spiritual needs. The occupations of pediatric nurses also entail responsibilities for ensuring the care of children, from routine checkups and vaccinations to the management of severe illnesses, including complications and other serious conditions (Riggins, 2024). For instance, in pediatric nursing, AI can be used to recommend individualized care plans based on patient information, the likelihood of potential diseases, and preventive measures and interventions. A recent study by Demirbaş et al. (2024) shows that the use of AI in pediatric settings has helped enhance diagnostic capabilities and the overall performance of procedures performed on patients. This study complements the idea that integrating artificial intelligence improves the overall quality of care to be rendered to young patients.

Legal, Ethical, and Safety Issues

• Legal Issues: One of the legal concerns regarding the application of AI in health care is the security of data because it is susceptible to hacking and consequently exposes the patient’s information to the public domain (Naik et al., 2022).
• Ethical Concerns: One of the major ethical issues related to the roles of AI in healthcare is the problem of bias reflected in differentiated recommendations about treatments or financial aid that can be provided.
• Client Safety Concerns: Client safety issues are related to decision-making in which AI is applied without adequate supervision by humans (Naik et al., 2022). It can lead to improper decisions about patient treatment or financial strategies.

Mitigating Strategies

• Mitigating Legal Issues: Concerning the legal problem of data breaches, healthcare organizations can take steps to include using information security (Rahman et al., 2024) and data encryption for the prevention of unauthorized patient data access.
• Mitigating Ethical Concerns: One solution is the ethical check and review of algorithms at least with specific intervals and their adjustment to minimize prejudice towards patients and ensure fair results for everybody.
• Mitigating Client Safety Concerns: To address risks related to client safety, some measures can be taken to integrate human supervision in AI activities( Rahmman et al, 2024). This requires the development of guidelines stating that AI recommendations must be reviewed and approved by physicians and other caregivers.

Reflection

I believe that AI technology is helpful in the healthcare sector, as it can help manage patient conditions and streamline numerous procedures. The use of AI analysis can help improve patient reinforcement and better time and resource allocation. As an advanced practice nurse, it will be important that I become familiar with emerging technologies to spearhead the transformation processes necessary for improving the health sector.

Conclusion

AI and data analytics have opened a new path in the healthcare system, which can revolutionize how patient experience is handled and how health institutions are run. In the article by Clarissa Riggins, the author uncovers that the use of AI technologies offers unique ways to achieve a multitude of goals that have been deemed pressing matters in the healthcare industry for years, such as transparent cost setting, customer-oriented financial backup, and effective revenue cycle management.
