Reflecting on the knowledge gained throughout this course and completing the activities in Phase 1, I have developed a deeper understanding of leadership principles, effective leadership behaviors, and the significance of mindfulness in professional nursing practice. The course encouraged intentional self-reflection, which enabled me to critically analyze my leadership style within the hospital setting and pinpoint specific areas for improvement. This thoughtful reflection has contributed significantly to my professional growth and boosted my confidence as a nurse leader.

One practical achievement from Phase 1 was creating a professional LinkedIn profile. This step allowed me to start building a network with fellow nurse leaders and healthcare professionals. Through this process, I realized the importance of utilizing digital platforms to increase professional visibility, encourage collaboration, and stay updated about leadership opportunities in healthcare. Moving forward, I intend to consistently leverage LinkedIn as a valuable tool for professional development and networking.

An important insight gained from this course was the power of therapeutic listening and purposeful communication. Enhancing these skills has improved my interactions with colleagues, especially those who may be resistant or disengaged. Instead of asking “why” questions, which can feel accusatory, I shifted toward “what” questions that focus on identifying obstacles and offering support. For example, asking “What barriers are preventing this task from being completed?” or “What resources do you need to succeed?” has helped build trust, encouraged teamwork, and led to better staff engagement and patient satisfaction. Although I continue to hone my active listening and mindfulness skills, the techniques learned provide a strong foundation for ongoing leadership development.

What Have I Learned About Professional Presence?

Reflecting on my Phase 1 Clinical Practice Experience (CPE) activities, I recognize considerable growth in my professional presence. I have become more aware of how my communication style, behaviors, and values influence others’ perceptions of me as a leader. Throughout my nursing career, my driving motivation has been “to help people and make a difference.” This course’s readings and reflection exercises helped me explore that motivation in greater depth.

Consequently, I have gained clearer insight into my personal strengths, areas for growth, and long-term career objectives. This increased self-awareness has reinforced my sense of purpose and strengthened my dedication to ethical, compassionate, and effective leadership in healthcare. Building a strong professional presence has also improved my ability to lead authentically and align my leadership actions with my core values.

How Has Updating My LinkedIn Profile Influenced Me?

Updating my LinkedIn profile proved to be a transformative experience inspired by this course. Before, I had not given much attention to maintaining an online professional presence. Yet, in today’s digitally connected healthcare environment, having an up-to-date professional profile is vital for networking, career progression, and establishing professional credibility.

The most challenging part was crafting the “Summary” section. Initially, I felt unsure about how to articulate my professional identity. Through reflection, I was able to express my passion for nursing, leadership philosophy, and career goals clearly, even while acknowledging the difficulties faced during the COVID-19 pandemic. Completing my profile connected me to a wider professional community and enhanced my sense of belonging among nurse leaders. Moreover, increased exposure to recruiters and job opportunities has boosted my optimism and motivation as I approach the completion of my academic program.

What Are My Plans for Support and Accountability?

To maintain my professional growth and leadership development, I plan to actively engage with reliable sources of support and accountability. Consistent communication with my mentor will be a priority, as mentorship offers encouragement, constructive feedback, and professional guidance. Although initiating regular phone conversations can sometimes be challenging, I understand their importance for sustaining accountability and momentum in my development.

Additionally, I intend to use course instructors as valuable academic and professional resources when I encounter uncertainties or challenges related to coursework or leadership practice. Knowing experienced professionals are available for support increases my confidence and willingness to seek help when necessary. These support systems will be crucial for my continued leadership advancement.
