Introduction and Background

My name is Kayla LaBrie. I completed my Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) from Husson University in 2012. Pursuing a Master’s degree has long been a goal of mine. Now that my children are more independent, I believe this is the ideal time to further my education before expanding my family. This decision feels both timely and essential for advancing my professional skills and personal growth.

What Are Your Current Professional Roles?

I hold multiple nursing roles across different settings. I work full-time as a Med-Surgical charge nurse and preceptor at a critical access hospital in Maine. In addition to this, I take per diem shifts at a nursing home, serve as a clinical instructor for Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs) at a local high school, and function as a corrections nurse at the county jail. As a charge nurse, I am highly visible and actively engaged in managing staff assignments and prioritizing patient care to ensure smooth operations within the department.

How Would You Describe Your Leadership Style and Approach?

I consider my leadership style effective because I consistently maintain a positive attitude and a calm demeanor, even in challenging or high-pressure situations. I prioritize leading by example, especially by showing compassion, empathy, and strong clinical skills. This approach builds trust and respect among the nursing staff and helps create a cooperative and supportive workplace culture.

Are You Involved in Any Mentorship Programs?

Yes, I am actively involved in my hospital’s mentorship program, which pairs new nurses with experienced mentors for one year. The program includes weekly communications through email or text, monthly face-to-face meetings lasting around one hour, and culminates with a year-end celebration dinner for all participants. Since its inception four years ago, this program has received consistently positive feedback for the support it offers new nurses transitioning into their roles.

What Are Your Goals for Pursuing a Master’s Degree?

My primary goal for pursuing a Master’s degree in Nursing Education is to broaden my teaching responsibilities beyond instructing high school CNA students and transition into university-level nursing education. Although I work in a critical access hospital, our team places strong emphasis on comprehensive training for new nurses. Every new hire completes three months of individualized Med-Surg training and an additional nine months of tailored training for those moving into the Emergency Department.

What Kind of Professional Support Network Do You Have?

I am fortunate to collaborate with many nurses who hold Master’s degrees, including several graduates from Western Governors University (WGU). Most of these MSN-prepared nurses, as well as many BSN-level nurses, are active members of the American Nurses Association (ANA). This professional community provides valuable support as I begin this new phase of my education and career development.
