DIT 8214 Week 9 Discussion Student Name Capella University DIT-8214 Professor Name Submission Date Within an IT decision-making process concerning business application requirements, an organization has to embrace a decision-making process that will be efficient, accountable, and reflective of the objectives of the organization. In the line of IT governance archetypes, the decision-making model that can be applied in my case relates more to a federal system of managing an IT system in healthcare facilities, and more specifically to the integration of IT systems in patient management and electronic health records (EHR). In the federal system, there is decentralization of the decision-making process, and the different departments or units enjoy some level of autonomy. This model is flexible and responsive to local needs and, therefore, it suits healthcare settings, where various departments (e.g., nursing, administration, and IT) can have specific needs. The IT decisions are not completely at the top in this structure, but they are not completely left in the hands of separate departments. Rather, there is a trade-off between central control through IT departments and local control in the individual units. This enables departments like the nursing to make decisions that are meaningful to their operations without necessarily violating the general IT governance standards and policies established at the organizational level. The advantages of the federal structure are its capacity to achieve the responsiveness of the local level and the control of the central authority (Scholta et al., 2025). An example is that without requiring a central IT body to approve it, the nursing departments can implement specialized IT solutions to address patient care, like the types of nurse-patient communication systems and automated medication administration records. This guarantees that the clinical work is not interrupted and is efficient. Moreover, the decentralized model promotes cooperation between IT and the other departments, which promotes innovation without violating the health standards and regulations. Nevertheless, one of the weaknesses of the federal structure is that it may be inconsistent across various units (Geenens & De Schutter, 2022). The process of IT system implementation may not be uniform, as decision-making is decentralized across the departments, causing system interoperability and data integration to be problematic. To illustrate, in case various departments have slightly different versions of patient management systems, it may give rise to data consistency problems or communication obstacles.
