 Some of the big data sources I am likely to use in the future as an advanced practice nurse include Electronic Health Records (EHRs). EHRs are comprehensive electronic summaries of patients’ clinical status that are created across different healthcare facilities. The use of EHRs in clinical practice has transformed the care delivery system by improving the availability and accuracy of patient data.

Types of Information Extracted from EHRs

EHRs offer a huge range of information, including:

• Demographic data: Patients’ age, gender, and ethnic and other demographic features, which contribute to defining patient populations and individualizing their care.
• Medical history: Previous diagnoses, surgical and allergy history, and other important medical events that may play a role in how a patient is medically managed.
• Laboratory test results: Biochemical during an operation, Hematology during an operation, Elevated liver enzymes, Creatine kinase, and other lab investigations to aid in the diagnosis and management of diseases.
• Imaging reports: Investigations like X-ray, MRI scan (Ehrenstein et al., 2020), and CT scan, which provide a pictorial description of the patient’s situation.
• Progress notes from healthcare providers: Patient chart, records, and correspondence, containing observations made, actions taken, and progress documented for “each time the patient is seen” and “each time the patient is contacted”.
• Immunization records: Records of vaccinations administered are important to both preventive health care and public health assessment.
• Vital signs: Vital signs such as blood pressure, pulse, and temperature are crucial determinants of a patient’s status at a given period.
• Lifestyle information: Basic demographics of the patient, as well as specific clinical biomarkers that pertain to the patient, such as smoking, alcohol (Ehrenstein et al., 2020), physical activity, and other history.

Impact on Client Care

Data from EHRs can be used in several ways to affect client care:

• Personalized Treatment Plans: An essential feature of the EHRs is their content of the patient record information, which enables the advanced practice nurses to make specific patient care plans depending on the medical history of the patients, coupled with their current state of health (Adeniyi et al, 2024). This increases the efficiency of Prozac treatments and thus affects patient statistics in the best possible way.
• Preventive Care: Analyzing the tendencies in relation to the patients, nurses can influence patient outcomes and utilize specific measurements that would help to minimize the probability of developing a particular disease (Adeniyi et al., 2024). For instance, there is the possibility of studying potential diabetic patients and educating them about necessary lifestyle changes and the need for constant monitoring.
• Improved Coordination of Care: EHRs are instrumental in coordinating care across the institution, which is important when learning from and implementing the treatment plan for our patient (Adeniyi et al., 2024). This increases coordination and continuity of care and reduces the risk of medical errors and incomplete care across successive phases of acute care for patients.

Role of the Advanced Practice Nurse in Data Stewardship

Advanced practice nurses play an important role in data stewardship by:

• Ensuring data accuracy and integrity: Guaranteeing the accuracy of the EHRs by updating the information of the patient to reflect the current facts, or verifying the records against the sources to avoid data lapses (Sevilla Guerra et al., 2021). This helps make clinical decisions based on accurate data.
• Protecting patient privacy and confidentiality: HIPAA put measures in place to protect patients’ information and other legal compliances (Sevilla Guerra et al., 2021). Clinical specialists are to pay particular attention to the protection of individually identifiable health information and patients’ rights.
• Utilizing data analytics: Improving clinical decision support by data mining, analysis, and evidence-based practice (Gibson et al., 2022). The use of patient data empowers nurses to gain insight into potential consequences of a given action and to identify patterns in their patient database that require personalized approaches.
• Educating patients: Involving the client in the care process by introducing clients to their data (Gibson et al., 2022). It enables patients to be involved in decision-making about their health and provides a healthcare touch.
• Collaborating with other healthcare professionals: Working with others in the multi-faceted healthcare team to better utilize data for research as well as projects geared towards improving the quality of patient care (Gibson et al., 2022). This helps improve the overall quality of care and encourages consistent refinement of practices in the healthcare field.
