Current Safety Concerns in the Practice Environment

 In the practice setting where I am currently working, hospital-acquired infections (HAIs) are a major safety concern. These infections, which include urinary tract, bloodstream, and surgical site infections, are potentially dangerous for patients and may worsen their health, prolong hospitalization, and increase the cost of healthcare treatment (Cristina et al., 2023). The concern here is to identify and control such infections as early as possible to prevent their spread and negative reflection on the patient’s health (Haque et al., 2020). While all necessary sanitary measures are still in place, HAIs remain a problem, underscoring the need for further improvements in monitoring processes.

Health Information Technology (HIT) Solution

HIT solutions for HAIs can be delivered through the installation of EISs where HAIs are prevalent, as they can be used to monitor infections effectively. This system will also serve as an extension of current electronic health records (EHR) systems in healthcare organizations, providing a reliable platform for real-time data analysis and the monitoring of infections within the hospital (Moore et al., 2020). EISS enhances the identification of infectious agents, enabling healthcare providers to detect potential outbreaks faster and respond accordingly.

Application to Enhance Safety

 The use of the EISS can greatly improve patient safety by enabling healthcare workers to receive warning signals of impending infections. Through real-time processing of patient data, the system has been able to detect trends and identify possible bacterial infections before they become critical, enabling practitioners to take prompt action on specific infection prevention and control measures (Sanni-Anibire et al., 2020). The EISS also embraced the practice guidelines, which involve developing custom prevention procedures in accordance with infection incidence. This proactive approach is useful in eliminating HAI incidence and providing a safer environment for everyone in health care facilities, including patients and staff.

Possible Unintended Consequence

As it is a positive step, the use of EISS to support decision-making may lead to an overload of information, which is not beneficial to healthcare staff. One important challenge is alert fatigue, in which employees stop responding adequately to many, sometimes low-priority alerts, and may completely miss important notifications (Sanni-Anibire et al., 2020). This is an issue experienced in environments with a high alert rate, which consequently generates a high volume of alerts that even the most dedicated healthcare worker cannot process.

Strategy for Mitigating Unintended Consequences

 To address this patient safety issue, it is important to have a prioritization action plan in the EISS. This can include sorting the alerts by degree of urgency and intensity, which would help the staff concentrate on the most pressing ones. Further, organised training sessions with healthcare professionals can likewise lead to a better understanding of the context and appropriateness of the alerts they issue (Haque et al., 2020). Making the alerts significant and practical, on the other hand, helps boost the system’s usability and, in essence, ensure appropriate interventions and, consequently, improved patient status.

Integration of Evidence

Several studies done by Haque et al. (2020) state that the use of electronic infection surveillance systems led to a thirty percent reduction in the hospital-acquired infection rate. These systems support timely, evidence-based infection control measures, thereby improving overall patient outcomes (Haque et al., 2020).
