Quality and Safety in Advanced Nursing Practice is a course that has provided me with some key concepts that have improved my learning about quality improvement and safety in advanced nursing practice. The concept of CQI and the way this actually translated into patient care, perhaps, was one of the most valuable ideas. As I was learning about the idea of root cause analysis (RCA) and the Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) cycle, I realized that structured and preventive practice is essential in addressing health care challenges.
These approaches underscore the importance of nurse practitioners (NPs) being attentive in the process of observing and shaping or advancing care provision, which I plan to execute into my practice by examining selected measures and processes. All of these will assist me in enabling an evaluation of the areas of review, assist the safety culture, and assist the evidence-based change in favor of the positive patient outcomes (Rosier et al., 2020).
One of them was connected with safety culture and involvement of NPs in facilitating the processes that enhance organizational safety and empower employees. Being a master prepared NP continuing my practice, I will be committed to ensuring effective and honest communication with both my patients and other stakeholders and teammates. It will include the responsibility of near-misses and adverse events, and tolerance to patients who report errors, as it is essential to train and update the system (Afolalu et al., 2020).
The last reflective practice-based part was the most useful as far as Program Outcome 3 was concerned. The recognition that I have cultural self-awareness and cultural sensitivity for patients is a step towards expanding my horizon. This is in accord to the PPG in one’s own personal and professional development since it encourages the knowledge of Self and regular education on the culture of values and health beliefs. I will make it a practice in this reflection by making sure that I read on patient needs and that I always make sure that I treat every patient with the respect that he/she deserves by realizing that he/she has a different cultural background.
The course assignments and activities also helped me to achieve Competency 5.2, which sub-competency 5.2 is concerned with the review of emergency preparedness system-level plans. Based on the analysis of the emergency preparedness contingency plans of various sites, I started to learn about the effectiveness of these plans to maintain the safety of patients, populations, and providers (Hick et al., 2020). This way, I intend to apply this knowledge in practice within the clinical setting through emergency planning and preparation by immediately identifying the places to be prepared in case there is any emergency that may occur during clinical practices that will influence the safety and quality of patient outcomes.
Besides, this course has made me possess the competencies to advance as a nurse practitioner, promote actions to combat issues related to safety when practicing reflectively, and focus on enhanced quality of care delivery.
