Introduction

Man Should Search for Meaning by Viktor E. Frankl is one of the most thought-provoking pieces of literature that provides readers with the experience of a hopeless search for the meaning of life (Shantall, 2020). Conducting a debate concerning the terrible periods he survived in the concentration camp and his knowledge as a psychiatrist Frankl cogently states his thesis that the fundamental nature of man is not the appetite for pleasure or power but the will for meaning. This pursuit is pivotal to the well-being and strength, even against the shroud of oppression. Interestingly, Frankl elaborated on the kind of existential analysis referred to as logo-therapy after being imprisoned in a concentration camp where he first noted that those who discovered a purpose in life were alive. This book not only gives us a vivid philosophical vision but also offers hands-on therapeutic approaches that are relevant to almost all kinds of practice areas, including nursing.

Primary Thesis and Development of Logo-therapy

I must note that the primary contention of the author regarding the purpose of humans is that the need to find meaning is the primary motivator and can operate even in concentration camp. Based on his experiences in one of the concentration camps where he and his wife were held captive for years, Frankl based his theory of Logo-therapy on the fact that those people who were determined to find meaning in their lives were mostly able to stand terrible trials than others (Lewis, 2020). Logo-therapy, therefore, posits that life’s meaning can be discovered in three ways, There is a common belief that in work (achievement of something important), in love (responsibility for another person by caring about them) and in the moments of darkness (courage). Echoing Alcibiades’ speech in the Symposium, Frankl’s suffering and what he observed in the concentration camp made him realize that it is the will to live and the search for meaning that will help one survive and remain sane.

Development of Nursing Theory

Nursing theory has evolved using personal experiences, clinical practice, and theory and empirical studies. Similarly, nursing theorists also observe real-life situations and incidences of nursing practice, concisely examine patterns, and develop concepts that explain these patterns (Tinashe Timothy Harry & Roelf Van Niekerk, 2023). Theories in nursing are created to enhance the quality of health and care services, directing practice, as well as offer a framework for evidence-based practice. They often preview all-around comprehensiveness, apply to the physical, emotional, and spiritual states of individuals, and refer to the holistic definition that Frank described.

Relevance of Logo-therapy to Nursing Theory and Development

Within the concept of nursing theory and advancement, Logo-therapy’s focus on both the physical and the spiritual aspects of a patient is helpful and its main postulate, which is the concept of will to meaning, is beneficial in the nursing practice (Chen, 2023). Personal reflection: Relating Frankl’s work to foundational nursing theories while nursing theories differ, one cannot help but notice that Frankl’s notion that suffering is tolerable when one has a purpose in life applies to most foundational nursing theories. It eliminates the objectivity of a scientific approach to the treatment of patients, calling for mutually caring nurse-patient interactions while addressing concerns of the patient’s subjective consciousness.

One can see that developing nursing skills through experience and a meaningful relationship with the patients is stated in the model which reflects the notion of Frankl about the search for meaning through work.

• Nurses can help patients in this healthcare context deepen their understanding of their value in life, which might help them have a better quality of life despite their often terminal conditions.
• One-to-one communication and psychotherapeutic approaches can be very effective in the management of mental health patients whereby the patients are encouraged to set personal objectives and gain a positive attitude towards life, including managing depression and anxiety disorders.

Frankl’s Man’s Search for Meaning is a timelessly inspiring and informative book that speaks about the human vintage of spirit and the ability to find purpose even when everything is lost (Coetsier, 2022). This quality of the blog makes it very engaging, especially to people studying or involved in Psychology, Philosophy, or health care because it incorporates his encounters with theoretical knowledge. Especially for nursing professionals, the book is quite insightful as it emphasizes the principles of person-centred care and how assisting patients to discover meaning in life can be both curative and effective.

In conclusion, Man’s Search for Meaning by Viktor Frankl is one of the most thought-provoking books that sheds light on how human beings can survive in the face of extreme pain, thus providing a profound insight into the nature of human resiliency and the significance of meaning in people’s lives.
