Application of Erikson’s Psychosocial Development Theory to the Character of Antwone Fisher

The question of childhood development is essential to define emotional, social, and psychological health of a person. Films depicting the growth and fate of children will probably provide certain powerful lessons concerning development theories that can be applied in predicting human actions. The film Antwone Fisher is a film by Denzel Washington, which was released in 2002, and offers an interesting example of psychosocial development. The film is based on the actual life story of a young African American man, Antwone Fisher, who served in the U.S.

Navy and cannot cope with his emotions and relationships with other individuals due to his childhood traumatic experience. This assignment applies Erik Erikson’s Psychosocial Development Theory to trace the developmental course of Fisher and the crisis that he experiences, the influences of biological, psychological, and social forces, and the way he passes through to solve his developmental issues.

This caused suppressed leadership and the feeling of guilt whenever he attempted to impose himself. His social and academic growth was affected by the role models and internalized shame negatively.

Finally, during the teenage years, there was the stage of identity vs. role confusion, and Fisher was having issues defining himself. He had been born into the world of manhood without an answer to the questions that were not well defined on his identity, his purpose, and his value, without the help of family support or identity (Krabbendam et al., 2024).

Biological, Psychological, and Social Factors

Because of biological factors, exposure to chronic stress and trauma at an early age might have affected the neurological maturity of Fisher, especially in regions involved in emotive regulation. Whether the etiology of behavioral problems is present due to unresolved developmental crises, the practitioner should be aware of this issue to apply interventions that will address emotional and relational deficits rather than symptomatic treatment of behavioral problems (Huseyin Kotaman & Aslan, 2024).

When dealing with the case of clients with various backgrounds, such as Fisher, interventions are sensitive and just because the cultural and environmental contexts are included as part of the assessment process. The sensitivity to developmental stages also makes social workers resistant to instilling resilience and leading the clients to self-actualization.
