Adolescence is a significant time of development that is characterized by physical, emotional, and psychological shifts. At this age, a person begins to define himself/herself, attempts to be independent, and forms his/her principles and beliefs (Best and Ban, 2021). However, the development changes tend to subject the employees to various psychological issues, including anxiety, depression, confusion with identity, and even suicidal inclinations.
Social workers, educators, and mental health professionals play an important role in assisting adolescents in this transition process because they get to learn the intricate psychological factors that influence their lives and well-being (Martel, 2021). The authors discuss in this argument the suicide and intervention rates in adolescence, the theory of faith development, the theory of identity formation, and the psychological dynamics of a fictional, real-life movie character.
Addressing Adolescent Suicide
The increasing rate of suicides among adolescents has been a problem of concern to the general population in the world. According to the report issued by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), suicide was listed among the leading causes of individuals aged 10-19 years (Adams and Dahlen, 2020). These factors are bullying, social isolation, family conflict, school pressure, and social media pressure. The social workers are also in a unique position of identifying individuals who are at risk and put in place preventive actions for the youth. Some of the effective interventions include improving communication, building trust, and setting up crisis intervention plans (Steimle et al., 2024).
Social workers can also provide psychoeducation to families and schools regarding the ways of recognizing the red flags of suicidal ideation. Adolescent suicide could be avoided through the implementation of programs that facilitate resilience, skills of coping, and emotional regulation, e.g., cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and mindfulness meditations, which can significantly reduce suicidal tendencies in adolescents. The rest of the partners, including schools, community-based organizations, and health care providers, will ensure that a multi-dimensional prevention and intervention strategy is realized (Derlic, 2022).
Fowler’s Theory of Faith Development in Adolescence
Trying to create the concept of how people construct their beliefs, values, and create a sense of meaning, it is possible to apply the theory of faith development by Fowler. At the adolescent stage, individuals are typically shifted to the stage of synthetic-conventional as they begin to experience their sense of faith and moral identity due to the influence of peer group, family, and culture (Jones, 2022). As a social worker, it is necessary to evaluate and respect the faith of an adolescent because, in most cases, a spiritual one serves as a protective aspect and can offer more coping and resilience.
My comfort regarding my ability to use faith as an intervention in social work is medium to high, because I believe that spiritual beliefs may be utilized to assist in making an ethical decision and to support emotionally. However, he or she must be culturally conscious and avoid imposing his or her values. Instead, faith needs to be integrated in a client-centered approach of exploring its impact on the worldview, values, and motivation of adolescents to create a positive change.
Identity Formation Theories in Adolescence
Among the most helpful theories in identity formation is the psychosocial theory concerning Erik Erikson, and in this instance, the stage of Identity vs. Role Confusion. Another aspect that Erikson emphasized is the reason behind the fact that adolescence is the period during which individuals start experimenting with different roles, values, and ambitions to stabilize their self-perception.
The lack of the ability to achieve identity clarity can lead to confusion, low self-esteem, and problems in later relationships (Jones, 2022). Social workers can apply the theory formulated by Erikson and guide the adolescents through the process of self-exploration and self-expression, and help them set personal goals that are not beyond their reach. These categories of identity, as used by Marcia (diffusion, foreclosure, moratorium, and achievement), complement this interpretation, as it assists in establishing which point an adolescent has reached in the identity development process. The theories are rather influential in the creation of supportive interventions to promote autonomy and self-understanding.
Psychological Challenges in a Movie Character
A good example of the psychological torment teenagers go through is the movie The Perks of Being a Wallflower, with Charlie as the movie’s character. The trauma during childhood and social isolation cause Charlie to be depressed, socially anxious, and have post-traumatic stress disorder. His experience presents the effects of unresolved grieving on an individual and the challenge of finding oneself in adolescence.
A fruitful intervention as a social worker would be a trauma-informed care wherein Charlie is allowed to air his emotions; on the other hand, he will overcome past experiences in a therapeutic process gradually. Peer support grouping and a reinforced coping mechanism would be good to regain his self-confidence and achieve a healthier self-concept.
Conclusion
Teenage is the period of discovery, weakness, and high possibilities. The mental factors, such as faith growth, identity formation, and emotional stability, are significant in propelling an adolescent to adulthood. Social workers play a vital role in recognizing and addressing these factors through being sensitive, educating, and implementing evidence-based interventions to achieve this.
Development workers will be in a position to foster resiliency and reduce the crisis of mental illnesses, including suicide, and empower adolescents to lead meaningful and purpose-filled lives through developmental theories and holistic practices. It is not only a personal requirement to support teens in these changing years but also a social one in order to nurture a greater generation that is healthier and more emotionally empowered.
