SWK5004 Week 1 Discussion 2

Diversity and inclusion are ethical and beneficial social work practices. There is a task that social workers have to resolve how the regimes of privilege, racism, and oppression shape the experiences of humans and social structures (Craig et al., 2021). The knowledge of a personal diversity profile is one of the most significant first steps towards the culturally humble and competent practice.

Examining my own settings, family, peers, education, workplace, and social networks, I would further understand the areas where diversity is evident in my life and where I need greater exposure to multiculturalism. Such introspection is associated with the principles of Access, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (ADEI) and the framework of the Anti-Oppressive Practice (AOP) that assists a social worker to promote justice and equity in every area of his/her work.

Diversity in My World

Based on my diversity profile, there is medium diversity in different aspects. The diversity in terms of educational level and socioeconomic status is not that much, though the majority of the population in my family setting belongs to the same racial, ethnic, and religious background. My colleagues and workplace, in turn, are more diverse, given that there are representatives of other races and cultures, genders, and religions.

Both schooling experiences, high school and college, enabled me to have a more diverse experience, in which I could view more of the key factors, including race, gender identity, and ability. A more comprehensive approach to diversity, manifested in this manner, broadened my general view and was more culturally accommodating.

The digital and social forces are highly varied in terms of their cultures and social interactions with people who subscribe to different countries and belief systems (Papadopoulos and Cleveland, 2023). However, the individuals surrounding my closest friends and me think more of the immediate backgrounds that I possess.

The places that I attend, such as the community centers and local markets, do not represent the marginalized people well. In general, my world is not very diverse, but it could be improved through the addition of individuals belonging to different religions, languages, and abilities.

Areas for Expansion

Though I interact with various individuals in the academic and business settings, I can confess that it is not as different in the context of community and social events. To support my multicultural awareness, I can actively participate in cross-cultural community events, volunteer in organizations that cater to underserved communities, and talk about the inclusion of race, disability, and gender (Vazsonyi et al., 2021). All this will enable me to overcome my natural inclination towards biases and help build a more globalized way of thinking in the world.

Learning ADEI and Anti-Oppressive Practice

Access, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (ADEI) is an encompassing notion of ensuring the equitable inclusion and representation of all people (Kelly, 2023). Hotspots Access does not put anyone in a disadvantaged position but offers them opportunities and resources they need; diversity acknowledges the fact that there is one difference, and equity is concerned with equity and fairness, inclusion enables one to fit and be respected. All of these principles will provide social workers with the ability to create a space that challenges discrimination and privilege when integrated.

Anti-Oppressive Practice (AOP) is an application of these principles by involving the issues of unequal power and structural injustices in the disadvantage of the disadvantaged groups (Mitchell et al., 2025). The AOP agenda requires the social workers to be critical in their analysis of their own positionality, challenge the oppressive systems, and even drive towards social change. It puts an emphasis on labor relations with the clients, in which their experienced lives are valued as potential power and knowledge.

Application in Practice

When dealing with marginal or oppressed customers, I would begin by being culturally humble since I am aware that I am not the authority in the lives of those clients. To have an intersectional lens in the discussion, I would use it to understand how confluent identities influence challenges and opportunities of a client, which is related to race, gender, and class interactions (Mitchell et al., 2025).

My planning interventions would be in a way that would allow respecting the fact that the goals would be jointly acquired, culturally relevant, and that would be constructed in a way that would enhance self-determination and reduce systemic barriers. It is one of the practices that adheres to the principles of ADEI and advocates anti-oppressive and client-centered practice.

Conclusion

The analysis of my diversity profile has helped me understand the influences of personal environment on professional practice better. Even though my environment is relatively heterogeneous, I can do more multiculturalism in certain ways. Following the principles of ADEI/ Anti-Oppressive Practice, I will have an opportunity to treat my clients with fairness, compassion, and respect so that my profession as a social worker contributes to the inequitable system breaking and building an inclusive society.
