The conclusion in any situation, personal and professional, is usually accompanied by a range of feelings of depression, fear, indecision, and even joy. Such emotions might be manifested in the practice of social work dramatically because the bond is created on the grounds of trust, support, and weakness. My experience in terminating myself has made me understand the role of being open and reflective.

In my work with clients, I deal with endings in recognition of the feelings they occur, accustom them to them, and make the process normative. This makes the clients realise that it is pretty natural to feel confused at the end of a good relationship. Providing a place where the clients can share their ideas and feelings will make a healthy closure and prepare them to be ready to make transitions in the future.

Significance of Early Introduction of termination

Creating the notion of termination in the first few sessions is a critical ethical and professional practice. This first conversation brings to light the understanding that the helping relationship requires a structure, purpose, and a timeline. By training the clients at the onset, it is possible to reduce the probability of dependency and help the clients envision a future post-service.

It is also helpful in making the clients to assume the ownership of their goals and progress because they know that the work is mutualistic and aimed at empowering (Guarino et al., 2024). Being prepared in advance helps to make the last stage of treatment more deliberate and client-centered since the termination is not sudden, unexpected, and overwhelming.

Causes of Firing and Unintentional Termination

Social workers can contemplate dismissal for a number of reasons. In the case of planned termination, the termination is usually successful as the clients reach their objectives, services are not required anymore, or the clients change status to a higher level of care. The reason for termination can also be attributed to logistical issues such as a change of location, a change in insurance, or the employment of the social worker.

This is more difficult with an unexpected dismissal. These occur whenever clients suddenly “check out, ” miss several sessions, or have crises, which interfere with the treatment (Feinstein, 2021).” These terminations leave the social worker and the client with the unfinished progress and unattained objectives. To minimize risks of unplanned terminations, social workers are encouraged to have regular communication, talk about barriers at an early stage, and assess involvement during the therapeutic process.

Termination Activities to Support a Healthy Termination

The termination must be well-structured, meaningful, and supportive. It is one of the main activities as the review of the client’s progress is conducted by considering the strengths, the achievements, and the progress of the client since the treatment started. This will assist the clients to see their achievements, and this will also build their confidence. The other important task is the formulation of a future-oriented plan or safety plan, particularly when the client is faced with chronic illnesses or dangerous circumstances (Hadian et al., 2025).

Continuity of care after the formal relationship is provided through the provision of referrals to community supports, further therapy options, or other resources. Lastly, offering emotional space to help the clients talk about their emotions regarding the ending is a way of promoting a healthy processing and closure. It is a strength-based model, which teaches the clients to cope with future changes on their own.

Conclusion

Termination is an important and critical phase in the social work process, which allows clients an opportunity to examine their development and prepare to live independently. Speaking about terminations in advance, realizing the reasons why termination is planned or unplanned, and doing the organized closing activities, social workers can be sure that clients will be supported and ethically provided with the process of closing. Finally, effectively managed termination boosts the client’s confidence, solidifies the acquired skills, and promotes long-term stability away from the relationship involving therapeutic intervention.
