Roleplay:

[Opening Session]

Angela: Good morning, Maria, with a pleasant smiling look in her face. It’s really nice to meet you. I am a family social worker at the community center, and my name is Angela. I would like to say that it is my great pleasure to meet you here today. How about doing this morning, boys? What do you think of it?

Maria: [Softly] We are okay. A little nervous, maybe… I don’t know what to expect.

Angela: Oh, Maria, that is quite understandable. It is very natural to be lost on a first date. Today, I would rather learn more about you and your family and to find out how we can cooperate to support you.

[Introduction]

Angela: Before we begin, I should like to tell you that I am addressing every one of you. You prefer to have your name called Maria, right?

Maria: Yes, Maria is fine.

Angela: Great. And shall we be all right to mention your sons, Jose and Ryan?

Maria: Yes, that’s okay.

Angela: Wonderful. In case you feel more comfortable, you can call me by my first name, which is Angela.

[Explaining the Process and Purpose]

Angela: I would like to tell you how our meetings are usually arranged. The main objective of the current session is to get to know more about your situation, what is working well, and what the possible challenges you are facing, together with your boys. On this basis, we can set certain objectives and find the resources that can be involved. I can be interrupted at any moment. Should there be anything you do not understand, or should there be anything you wish to clear up? Does that sound okay to you?

Maria: Yes, that sounds fine.

[Disclosure of Confidentiality and Releases]

Angela: And I would like to mention something about confidentiality. Our conversation here will be kept between you and me, unless there is a situation where the safety of an individual is in danger, such as when an individual is being battered or even when a child is in danger. In this case, I would be required to share such information with the appropriate individuals to make sure people are safe.

Maria: Oh, I do not want you to tell other people what I say.

Angela: No, no, not without your permission. It is only necessary to release information to another professional, e.g.: doctor or a counselor, in case you sign a release of information form. Whatever is being said and to whom is always your prerogative.

Maria: Hmm, that is a relief to me.

[Exploring the Problem]

Angela: Maria, would you care to tell me a bit as to what made you come to this place today in search of services?

Maria: [Breaths deeply] I am digging a difficult grave since I lost my job. My son is not healthy, and Jose is not performing well at school. People keep saying that he requires medicine, but I do not think that is the only solution.

Angela: It appears that your life has been difficult, having to juggle between the well-being of Ryan and the poor academic problems of Jose, and trying to get a job. It is too much for one person to handle.

Maria: Yes, there are occasions when I believe that I am failing them.

Angela: I hear you, Maria. You have your best, and your affection for your boys is clear. We will be able to get along and find some support that will fit you- judgment-free.

Angela: Would you mind explaining more about Jose’s school behavior?

Maria: he is smart but very violent. At other instances, he fights with other children.

Angela: It seems that he has some emotional issues. Maybe he can be made to put them into a safe word, both at home and at school.

Angela: How is Ryan doing health-wise at the moment?

Maria: Sometimes the asthma is too much, and the doctor wishes that his heart was checked again.

Angela: That could never be good, with you. You are doing the right thing by keeping him under care. The other program that can be researched is the support of the family in need of medical attention.

[Summary and Conclusions]

Angela: To conclude what we have talked about today, you are struggling to take care of Jose and Ryan, and you are forced to handle financial matters, issues regarding the behaviour of Jose, and the health of Ryan. Then we will take into consideration some of the local support systems like child care, medical care, and even counseling for Jose.

Maria: That would help. Thank you for listening.
