[Opening Session]

Angela: Good morning, Maria, with a pleasant smiling face. It is my great honor to see you. I am Angela, a social worker with the community centre in a family setting. I would wish to inform you that it is my great pleasure to see you here today. Should we this morning? What do you think of our communication?

Maria: We are okay or a little nervous, maybe… I do not know what to expect.

Angela: Well, of course, Maria, that is quite understandable. On a first visit to the place being discussed, it is only natural to feel lost. Today, I would like to know more about you and your family and identify the ways in which we can cooperate to help.

[Introduction]

Angela: I should like to explain that I am talking to each of you personally before we get down to business. Well, you would want to be called Maria, right?

Maria: Yes, Maria is fine.

Angela: Wonderful. And shall we use my first name, Angela, it will be convenient for you?

Maria: Yes, that’s okay.

Angela: Excellent. In case you ever feel like you need to address your sons, Jose and Ryan, that is also acceptable.

[Explaining the Process and Purpose]

Angela: There is one more thing I would like to discuss: how our meetings are usually organized. The main purpose of the present session is to gain a complete picture of your situation: what is working well, what your problems and your children are facing, and we will work out goals and find possible resources. I can clarify any of the components at any time. In case there is anything that is not clear, or you want to have a clarification, please inform me. Is this method satisfactory?

Maria: Yes, that sounds fine.

[Disclosure of Confidentiality and Releases]

Angela: The issue of confidentiality also needs to be discussed. Our discussion will be a confidential one between you and me, with a few exceptions in case of situations where the safety of a person is in danger, like in a case where one person is mistreated by their spouse or a child is in urgent need. I would have no choice but to spread relevant information to relevant professionals to promote safety in these situations?

Maria: Oh, I do not want you to say what I say to other people.

Angela:  No, no, otherwise not without your express permission. Only in the case of your signature of a release form will the information be released to another qualified professional, like a physician or a therapist. The choice of whom to inform is entirely on your own.

Maria: Hmm, that is a relief to me.

[Exploring the Problem]

Angela: Maria, would you please explain the situation that made you come to this facility today seeking services?

Maria: [Breaths heavily] I am going through a serious dilemma because today I am jobless. My son has health problems, and Jose is at a poor performance academically. Though there are several proponents of medication, I do not feel that it is the only medication.

Angela: Clearly, your life has been made difficult as you have to strike a balance between the welfare of Ryan and the bad school grades of Jose, who, at the same time, must find a job. It is too much of a burden on an individual.

Maria: Yes, there are times when I think I am not passing them.

Angela: I understand, Maria. Your intentions are good, and your love for your sons is obvious. We will be able to work together to find supportive resources that are not judgmental.

Angela: Can you explain more about the conduct of Jose at school?

Maria:  He is smart but violent; he has had other instances where he gets into fights with other students.

Angela:  It means that there are some emotional problems. Maybe he could be persuaded to express these feelings, both at school and at home.

Angela: What is the physical health status of Ryan?

Maria:  Sometimes his asthma is critical, and the doctor has recommended the reconsideration of his cardiac activity.

Angela: [Such cases require further attention]. Moreover, it is wise to conduct some studies on supportive programs that families in medical need could use.

[Summary and Conclusions]

Angela:  To conclude, our visit today brings out your difficulty in taking care of Jose and Ryan, your financial stress, perennial problems with Jose, and his health. In this regard, we are going to take into account the local support networks as having child care, medical services, and counseling that can be offered to Jose.
