Grief and loss are compound emotional situations that may significantly interfere with the psychological, social, and occupational functioning of an individual. The death of his spouse, as well as the fact that Trevor did not have medical insurance, have also contributed to the emotional distress and socioeconomic instability of his situation.

As a counselor, it is essential that an effective model of intervention is instituted in order to achieve recovery, stability, and resilience. The current discussion will draw on the Crisis Intervention Model as it applies to the case of Trevor in the examination of macro practice intervention approach to address greater systemic issues that affect his health.

Application of the Crisis Intervention Model

The Crisis Intervention Model is a model that aims to provide short-term and urgent intervention or help to people who are undergoing a crisis that is overwhelming them to the point where they are unable to handle. The grief of Trevor is also a crisis of emotions and situations. The first step would be the achievement of rapport and ensuring his physical security by suicidal ideation or self-harm examination (Carson et al., 2024).

As he does not think about suicidal thoughts with suicide, the center can be moved to emotional stabilization and problem resolution. The second step would be for the counselor to help Trevor overcome his loss by allowing him cope with his grief, his anger, and his helplessness. This stage would be primarily focused on active listening, empathy, and reflective communication. The counselor would then help Trevor to decide on the previous coping mechanisms that worked in the stressful situations that he had been facing and encourage the use of this coping mechanism.

This would be followed by real-life problem-solving that would involve searching temporary financial sources, flexibility at employment, in addition to low-cost mental health support programmes (Hayvon, 2024). Lastly, the counselor and Trevor would come up with a short-term action plan that would include emotional support, community resources, and further counseling to ensure there is a restoration of the functional balance. The model has the purpose of helping Trevor to regain control, to remake coping mechanisms, and to turn the crisis into adaptation.

Macro Practice Intervention Strategy

In addition to individual counseling, there is a need to have macro-level interventions that can deal with the systemic barriers that affect Trevor’s recovery, particularly his inability to have medical insurance. One of the strategies of the macro practice would be to refer Trevor to community-based social services, which provide subsidized health services, bereavement, and financial services (José Carlos Romero-Moreno et al., 2024).

The deficit caused by the lack of insurance could be filled by working with local nonprofits, church groups, and community health centers. Also, supporting healthcare and social equity is in line with the tenets of Chapter 14, which presents the interaction between individual issues and social organization. Such concepts are involved as empowerment, mobilization of resources, and social justice. The counselor helps not only to ensure that Trevor recovers personally but to act as a source of strength to the community at large by connecting Trevor to support networks as well as making policy changes that would reduce health disparities (Liu et al., 2023).

Conclusion

The case of Trevor highlights the nexus between grief and socioeconomic hardship to create a difficult crisis to be resolved both micro and macro. The Crisis Intervention Model consists of a caring and comprehensive approach of stabilizing at hand and boosting coping mechanisms. At the same time, macro practice strategies address the systemic injustices that amplify distress in individuals.
