Role Play Reflection

The reflection reveals what I have learned due to the role-play session conducted and recorded. It includes my experiences as the social worker, the client, and the observer, my gained skills, and areas of development.

My role in the role-play was that of the social worker, one participant, who was the client (Maria Santos), and another participant, who became the observer and was able to provide feedback to the role-play. The social work experience taught me that I had to be organized and ready to be flexible to the emotional needs of the client. I have also learned that active listening, empathy, and summarization are necessary to establish a rapport and make the clients feel that they can be supported and understood (Spilsbury et al., 2022).

As the client, I have got to know that one should not be afraid of sharing personal information because it is actually terrifying. I also paid more attention to the fact that I had to encourage a gentle tone, non-judgmental words, and be more patient as a means of helping clients feel safe and respected (Banks et al., 2020). I, as the viewer, was educated to pay attention to little details like the change of posture, facial expression, or pauses.

This perspective allowed me to see how objective feedback can be used to improve practice. The two skills I learned this week were clarifying statements of clients and open-ended questions. I utilized them by placing the discussions into focus and stimulating more thinking among the clients.

I am also working on the redirection of the thoughts of the client and effective use of silence, which I lack confidence and comfort in (Nord-Baade et al., 2024). I can also use an anti-oppressive approach, which would entail the validation of client experiences and being nonjudgmental and encouraging client autonomy through joint decision-making (Wen et al., 2020).

Conclusion

Overall, role play helped me to learn more about communication and cultural humility, and communication. Such observations will aid me in continuing to continue with developing my professional helping skills.
